How to Become a Real Estate Agent in Manitoba - Royal LePage

Steps to Your Career

Step 1: Find out if it’s right for you

A career change is always a big decision, and not one to be taken lightly. A real estate career isn’t exactly how it’s portrayed on TV. Before you invest your time and money in the next step, be sure that this a career you want. Do your due diligence. Talk with friends and family, investigate the career before you make the final decision. Being a full-time Real Estate Agent is not a job, it’s a business - you are the owner. Here are some helpful tips:

  • Fill out the Personal Orientation Profile
  • Talk to friends and family
  • Call your local Royal LePage office to take a tour, meet their agents and speak with a broker

Step 2: Register for the Real Estate Licensing Program

Beginning on January 2, 2014, in order to become a Real Estate Agent you have to complete a series of Salesperson Licensing courses which consists of four modules. After successful completion you become a fully licensed Real Estate Agent. The first three modules are are completed with a text book and a workbook at home, while the fourth module consists of 1.5 days of classroom instruction. They are also available to be taken online.

If you are considering enrollment or are currently enrolled in the courses, please view the links below for more information about the changes that will take affect as of January 2, 2014.

Course registration is held at the Manitoba Real Estate Association at:

1873 Inkster Boulevard
Winnipeg, Manitoba

Step 3: Select a brokerage to partner with

There are many brokerages throughout Winnipeg, all with different fee structures, cultures, training and development. Some agents taking the courses start interviewing at brokerages during their courses. Interviewing during Phase 3 is recommended to ensure once you complete your licensing requirements, you can hit the ground running. Find out how RLP can help you.

Step 4: Apply to the Manitoba Securities Commission for your license

The Manitoba Securities Commission has a licensing fee of $125.00 and will perform a criminal background check (approx 24-48 hours).

Step 5: Apply to the Local Real Estate Boards for Registration

If you are employed by a broker who is a member of a real estate board or association, there are additional fees: board or association dues, a one-time initiation fee for the MREA REALTOR® Security Program, plus levies for the MREA Reimbursement Fund and the REIAOC Errors and Omissions Insurance Program (these range from approximately $1600 to $2600).
